How to Start a Health Coaching Business (While Working Full-Time)

If you’re currently working full-time and trying to build your health coaching practice on the side… you’re not alone.

This came up in a recent practitioner roundtable I hosted, and it turned into one of those conversations where everyone kind of paused and thought, wait… how are we actually supposed to do this?

Because it’s one thing to say you want to start your practice.

It’s another thing to figure out how that fits into a life that already feels full.

Between work, kids, relationships, responsibilities, and everything else… there isn’t a wide open schedule just waiting for you to build a business.

And for a lot of coaches, that’s where things start to feel stuck.

Working full-time and trying to start your health coaching business? Here’s a simple way to begin.

The “I Don’t Have Time” Problem

Most people assume the next step is taking on one-on-one clients.

That sounds logical. It’s what we’re trained to do. It’s what we see other practitioners doing.

But when you’re already working full-time, that can quickly turn into trying to squeeze calls into evenings, juggling schedules, and feeling like you’re always a little behind.

It can also bring up a lot of pressure.

Am I ready for this?
What if I don’t know enough yet?
What if I can’t fully support them?

So instead of moving forward, a lot of people end up waiting.

Waiting for more time.
Waiting to feel more confident.
Waiting until everything feels more “set up.”

A Simpler Way to Start

One of the most helpful shifts that came up in that conversation was around how we think about getting started.

A lot of us naturally go straight to one-on-one clients, which can feel like a lot when your schedule is already full.

What came up instead was starting with a small group.

Something simple and structured, where you’re guiding a handful of people through the same foundational habits together over a short period of time.

For a lot of practitioners, that ends up fitting much more easily into real life.

It might look like a few weeks long, with one call each week, scheduled at a time that works for you.

Nothing elaborate. Just something you can actually follow through on.

Why This Works So Well

When you work with a group, you’re making better use of the time you already have, and you have a lot more control over how you’re using it.

You’re showing up once and guiding several people through the same process, which creates a different kind of rhythm.

It also shifts the feeling of pressure.

You’re not expected to solve every complex health issue or have every answer ready.

You’re guiding people through the basics.

👉🏻 Helping them eat real food.
👉🏻 Supporting digestion.
👉🏻 Improving energy.
👉🏻 Creating simple habits that they can stick with.

And those things matter more than most people expect.

When someone experiences even a few small wins, something shifts. They feel better. They feel encouraged. And they start to trust both the process and the person guiding them.

That’s where momentum begins to build.

What This Looked Like for Me

When I first decided to go all in on nutrition coaching, one of the first things I invested in was a group-style program.

I knew I needed a way to work with more than one person at a time while I was still learning, building confidence, and figuring out how I wanted to show up.

And it did exactly that.

It gave me structure, a starting point, and a way to begin working with people before I felt completely ready.

Over time, I realized I didn’t need to keep adding more layers or making things more complex.

What I needed was something simple and repeatable.

Something I could run again and again.
Something that fit into my schedule.
Something that still delivered real value.

That realization changed a lot for me.

If You’re in This Season Right Now

If you’re working full-time and trying to build your practice, it makes sense that it feels hard. You’re building something meaningful on top of a life that already has a lot in it. And in this season, the goal isn’t to do everything at once. It’s to begin in a way that you can actually sustain ( and get the highest ROI for your time😉).

Something simple.
Something structured.
Something you feel good showing up for.

And that’s usually where things start to move forward more quickly than you expect.
